Attica - The Cradle of Antiquity

The region of Attica fascinates with stunning landscapes and countless historical buildings which transport travellers back to ancient times. A major part of the region is taken up by the Greek capital of Athens, which was named after the goddess Athena.

Attica - the most densely populated region in Greece

Geography - The most densely populated region in Greece

Attica is a region in the south of Greece and lies in the classical landscape of the same name. Its capital, which is also the region's administrative centre, is the Greek capital of Athens. Since a law was changed in 2010, Attica has been a prefecture, a political region. It has an area of 3,808 km² and a population of 3,827,624 people, which makes it the most populated region in Greece. It borders on Central Greece in the north and on the Peloponnese in the west. The southernmost island of Antikythira is about 30 kilometres north-west of Crete. Another significant city is the port city of Piraeus, which accommodates the country's most important harbour. The islands of Hydra, Kythera, Methana, Poros, Salamina and Spetses also belong to Attica.

Athens and its surroundings

Nature - Typically Mediterranean landscapes

The region lies on a peninsula and is enclosed by the Aegean Sea on three sides. In the north, you see the mountain range of the Parnitha, which constitutes the natural border of Central Greece. It extends over an area of 40 kilometres in west-east direction. The highest peak is the Karavola with a height of 1,413 metres. In Athens, you can take the cable car to the Lycavittus Hill and enjoy the extraordinary view of the city. In addition, there are breathtaking hills such as Agia Sofia Cave, Bekiri Cave, the Cave of Euripides, Davelis Cave and Peania Cave. Holidaymakers who want to relax can do this at one of the countless beaches. Examples are the beaches in Athena, the beaches on the islands of Salamina and Kythera as well as Faneromeni Beach. Attica is characterised by many green spaces, scenic vineyards and bays - a typically Mediterranean landscape.

Culture - Following the traces of Poseidon

Most people who hear the name "Attica" think of the metropolis of Athens. History and modernity meet in Greece's capital. From ancient buildings like the Acropolis or the Odeon of Herodes Atticus to the administrative building in classical style to modern hotels and trams. The Zappeion, the Trilogy of Athens, the parliament building at Syntagma Square and the National Archaeological Museum are especially worth seeing. Near Athens you find the famous Daphni Monastery. Another highlight is a visit to the Panathinaiko Stadium, where the first Olympic Games of the modern era took place in 1896. But the region has much more to offer than just the city of Athens. Travellers find fascinating archaeological excavation sites, beautiful small mountain villages and port towns only a stone's throw away from the capital. A particularly well-known and popular destination is Cape Sunion at the southern tip of the peninsula. It owes its popularity to the ruin of the ancient marble Temple of Poseidon, which is located on a rock and towers above the city. Another attraction is the Acropolis of Ancient Salamina on the island of the same name. The Mycenaean settlement in Kanakia is also worth a visit.

In summer, you should not miss out on a visit to one of the open-air cinemas in Athens. English films with Greek subtitles are shown here. Attica is also a great shopping destination. While you can buy souvenirs in the mountain villages and harbour towns, there are several great shopping centres such as the Athens Heart Mall, the Athens Metro Mall and The Mall Athens in Athens. The nightlife is lively and colourful as well. From the typical evening in the tavern with ouzo and bouzouki to modern parties, which attract the younger generation - Attica caters for all tastes.
